The Waterways
Throughout
Toorbul, Meldale and Donnybrook there are numerous waterways where
you can enjoy swimming, fishing, boating or just relaxing by the
sea all year round. Many properties are located on absolute waterfront
and those that are not are never far from the water. Access is
straightforward with many boat ramps as well as ample waterfront
parks with barbeque and picnic facilities.
The main waterway in the area is the internationally
recognised Pumicestone Passage Marine Park which has a rich abundance
of wild life. The passage stretches from Golden Beach in Caloundra
through to Deception Bay in the south. It is protected by marine
and national parks, wetland reserves and fish habitat reserves.
Several islands are located in the passage and there is plenty
of space to find a quiet spot to fish, swim or just relax and
forget about the rest of the world for a while.
The Beaches
If
what you are after is sandy surf beaches then you will be pleased
to know there is a wide variety nearby. The closest are on Bribie
Island 20 minutes away with a fully patrolled surf beach on the
ocean side of the island and several sandy beaches on the calm
side. For the Four Wheel Drive enthusiasts there is approximately
30km of beach on the ocean side of Bribie to explore.
The world renowned Sunshine Coast beaches are
a short 45 minute drive away with the holiday town of Caloundra
the first stop. The Sunshine Coast is a popular holiday spot for
people from Queensland and the southern states with a warm climate
and a wide variety of beaches with something for everyone - open
beach breaks, point breaks and sheltered coves for the family.
The Wildlife
This
area is a haven for native wildlife especially marine and bird
species although land mammals are also in abundance. The Pumicestone
Passage is home to many marine animals including Dolphins, Dugong,
Turtles and numerous fish species. The passage is the southern
most habitat on the east coast for Dugong which can be spotted
grazing on the sea grass beds. Dolphins are a more common sight
and can be spotted cruising up and down the passage daily.
Our area is an internationally recognised habitat
for birds with some migratory species coming from as far away
as Siberia to spend the northern winter here. The pumicestone
passage has been awarded protection for it's birdlife under several
international treaties including RAMSAR, CAMBA and JAMBA. It is
said that there are more bird species in the Pumicestone Passage
area than in Kakadu National Park. The sight of hundreds of birds
taking off at once is a spectacular yet common sight here.
Land animals are also common here and Kangaroos
are a regular sight. Every day at dusk the kangaroos gather at
the south end of Toorbul Point in large numbers delighting both
locals and visitors alike.
The City
You
may feel like you are a million miles from anywhere here but you
are less than one hour's drive from Brisbane's CBD and even less
to the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Commuting to the city for
work is a breeze with express trains running from Caboolture regularly.
The Rainforest
Several rainforest areas are right on the doorstep
of Toorbul, Meldale and Donnybrook with the Glass House Mountains
and D'Aguilar ranges nearby. As well as Rainforest walks and mountain
hikes you can stop for a coffee at one of the many nearby mountain
towns like Maleny, Woodford or Montville.
